BOOKS FOR SALE

At the PIC, you'll find our library filled with books about sex work. These books are written in both Dutch and English and range in topic from policy to research, autobiographies, and more. You can read our library books only at the PIC. They are not available to take away.

AMSTERDAM RED LIGHT DISTRICT: THE FUTURE OF OUR PAST (Available in English and Dutch)

Mariska Majoor: "On the basis of personal memories of past times as a window prostitute and candid conversations about it with my twenty-two-year-old daughter Robin, I sketch a picture of the Red Light District and the influence that social discussion and political intervention have on this special neighborhood and its people. During a walk through the Red Light District described in the book, we talk with each other but also with Mayor Halsema, sex workers and brothel owners, residents, entrepreneurs and others who have something to do here. No subject goes undiscussed. Robin took photos of the area along the way that are depicted in black-and-white in the book." - May 2020. The Dutch version costs €19.95 and the English version costs €18.85.

WHEN SEX BECOMES WORK (Available in English and Dutch)

"When Sex Becomes Work" was first published in 1999 and rewritten in 2015 by Mariska.  An absolute 'must have' for anyone who wants to know more about prostitution. The Dutch version costs €14.95 and the English version is for sale for €17.95.

UNITED UNDER A RED UMBRELLA (Available in English only)

On December 17, 2017, Mariska and her daughter, Robin, published their book, "United Under a Red Umbrella." It was the result of travels to 13 countries across 5 continents to portray sex workers' struggles and working conditions, and every trip was a powerful experience in its own way. Sex workers are saying the don't want to be rescued from their work. The problems they face result from bad laws, stigma, gender-based discrimination, and living conditions. The book is for sale at the PIC for €15.

ECHTE KNUFFELS EN MEER... (Available in Dutch only)

In her book, "Echte knuffels en meer...", the Amsterdam native describes her experiences in a light-hearted, funny, and above all, non-pornographic way. Both the good and less fun sides of the profession are discussed, including an intense confrontation with the municipality. The officials would rather have her behind a window in the Red Light District, but Jorma does not see herself there. For sale for €14.95 at the PIC.

DE WAARHEID ZAL ME BEVRIJDEN (Available in Dutch only)

"De Waarheid Zal Me Bevrijden" tells the powerful story of Alejandra, a trans woman who escapes poverty and danger in Mexico in search of freedom. After facing hardship in the U.S., she arrives in the Netherlands in 2015, determined to live openly and authentically despite the struggles of the asylum system. Her journey is one of resilience, identity, and the unrelenting hope for a safe home. It is available for purchase at the PIC for €23.

The first edition is composed of a selection of sex worker pieces written between 2020-2024. The price for sex workers is €15 and the price for non-sex workers is €20.
